Generally speaking, a software script that you install on your server will serve you best if you do any viral marketing and don't want on your links turning up dead when some service goes under. It will also save money in the long run as you avoid the monthly service charges.

However, not everyone is "techy" enough to want to install scripts and deal with maintainence hassles (and probably pay a higher monthly hosting fee as well).  In which case, you'll want to just subscribe to a service and let them deal with the "techy" stuff.
